       “Brain stem perfusion is impaired in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome.”

          “…a patient’s brain stem goes bad and results in Fibromyalgia.”

           The Brain Stem is the obvious topic in the research from both the UCL Medical School in London and Dr. Ryan’s article.  A growing number of doctors have pointed to the relationship between the Upper neck (cervical spine), the spinal cord and brain stem is an extension of the brain that controls and coordinates many functions of the body.

               “Atlas Neurovascular Syndrome (ANVS)”

           What in the world is that?  Atlas Neurovascular Syndrome or ANVS for short, is considered by a growing number of doctors to be a major key to Fibromyalgia Syndrome.  Let me explain this to you  in plain English…

          You see, your entire body needs to have normal nerve impulses generated in the brain stem.  These nerve impulses are like electric signals, sent up and down the spinal cord to all the parts of your body, through the narrow passageway at the base of the skull and through the center of the top bone of the neck.  This bone is called the Atlas (first cervical vertebra, or upper cervical spine).  And then we have the vertebral arteries, which supplies oxygen to the brain, passing through tiny holes on each end of this Atlas bone.  This Atlassupports the entire weight of your head above (9-14 pounds on average) even though the Atlas weighs 2 ounces!

          So here’s what happens:

           Due to a wide variety of causes the Atlas can misalign slightly off center from the head above.  This can cause changes in the shape or narrowing of the spinal canal (stenosis).  And this can result in a compression syndrome of the spinal cord, which passes through the canal.  This means that the nerves become blocked, irritated or compressed in some way.
